An in-line circulator pump, or 3-piece circulator, is comprised of three main components: The volute, the motor and the bearing assembly. So what are the three most commonly repaired parts on a 3 piece circulator?

A bearing assembly connects the pump motor and volute via a shaft on each end. Bearing assemblies must be periodically lubricated to ensure proper operation unless they are self-lubricating or “maintenance-free.” Because they have many moving parts and are in constant use, they are prone to wear and are commonly in need of replacement. A turning motor that isn’t pumping water probably has a worn-out bearing assembly. Fortunately,

A seal is used to prevent water from entering the bearing assembly from the volute. Clean water can act as lubricant and enhance a pump’s life. However, water often contains impurities and solid debris that cause friction and result in corrosion of the seal. Leakage near the connection between the volute and bearing assembly is the classic sign of a damaged seal.  Like bearing assemblies, seals are easily replaceable and cost significantly less than replacing an entire pump. Couplers attach to and in-line circulator’s motor shaft on one end and its bearing assembly shaft on the other end, joining the two. They minimize the noise produced by the pump motor and act as a failsafe, protecting the motor from damage if a failure occurs.
