Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Goulds WS_D3 Series Sewage Pumps


The Goulds WS_D3 sewage pumps are sewage pumps designed to be used in conjunction with a guide rail system (A10-30/ A10-30B) or a base elbow disconnect system with 125# ANSI system flanges for horizontal discharge. Each of these pumps can handle up to 2-½” maximum waste solids. These pumps are ideal for general sewage systems, flood and pollution control, farms, hospitals, trailer courts and motels. The WS_D3 series pumps are used at a variety of application levels, including residential, commercial or industrial levels.

Each pump volute is made of heavy duty cast iron, while the shaft and fasteners are 300 series stainless steel. While these pumps are capable of running dry intermittently they perform best while continuously submerged. Dual silicon carbide vs. silicon carbide seal faces, BUNA-N elastomers and an O-Ring ensure protection against leaks and contaminants. All in all, this is a solid and versatile sewage pump.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Goulds Series RGS2012 Grinder Pumps



Goulds RGS2012 series submersible grinder pumps are specifically designed for high head sewage applications where installing a gravity system is not practical. They are ideal for grinding in pressure sewage applications. The cutting system is a unique anti-roping design with a two blade rotary cutter threaded to the shaft. The stationary cutter ring is reversible allowing you to extend the service life. Both the rotater and ring are made with 440 C hardened stainless steel to handle the toughest waste solids.

The pump casing itself is rugged cast iron and can be adapted to fit with the proper guide rail system. The motor shaft is 300 series stainless steel. The pump and motor are designed for continuous operation when fully submerged. The main difference among the models listed here is the type of power cord included with each; some have bare leads for use in connection with a control panel or junction box while other have three prong grounding plugs. All models are single phase.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyer’s Guide: Goulds WS_B Series Sewage Pumps



Goulds WS_B Series Model 3886 pumps are rugged cast iron sewage pumps. These pumps were specifically designed for residential or light commercial usage in sewage systems and can also be used for dewatering/effluent and general water transfer applications. Constructed with a semi-open, dynamically balanced non-clog impeller with pump out vanes, this expertly engineered pump can handle waste solids up to 2” in diameter. The volute is cast iron and can easily be installed on the A10-20 guide rail or base elbow rail system. The fasteners and shaft are corrosion resistant stainless steel.

The pump can run dry without damage to the main components but is meant to run continuously while submerged. Each pump can withstand 140° F temperatures intermittently and 104° F temperatures continuously. All models featured here are manual and come with a 20 ft. power cord. An option for a bronze impeller is also available.

Each pump is built with either an iron or bronze construction and can pump liquids compatible with the pump’s body type. Zoeller sumps are all characterized by rugged construction, excellent engineering and consistent performance. In addition to performing standard basement sump applications, most of these pumps can be used for general dewatering and effluent applications as well.


Zoeller 49 Series Water Ridd’r III

The Zoeller 49 Water Ridd’r III pumps are submersible dewatering pumps. The pump itself is made of rugged cast iron with a baked-on enamel finish for corrosion resistance, while the base and pump housing are constructed of glass-filled polypropylene with no screen. A non-clog vortex impeller made of engineered glass-filled thermoplastic (with a metal insert) allows the pump to pass ⅜” spherical solids. The Water Ridd’r III 49 models are lightweight (11 lbs.) and compact about (9” x 10-½”) making them ideal choices for dewatering applications in confined spaces or if you want an easily portable dewatering pump.

Zoeller Premium Sump Pump Model 63

The model 63 is advertised as Zoeller’s “Premium” sump pump model. The automatic version features advanced switch technology that prolongs the life of the switch, a viton switch arm boot and a green LED plug which shows the power to the pump attached to to the heavy-duty rubber power cord. The pump also features corrosion-resistant construction and a powder coated epoxy paint finish for added durability. The cast iron models also provide heat dissipation from the motor. Zoeller Aqua-Mate 70 Series

Zoeller’s Aqua-Mate pumps are reliable and versatile pumps built for dewatering in residential or light commercial applications. Thermoplastic Aqua-Mate models come are built with noncorrosive engineered plastic pump housing, motor housing and base. The plastic construction and lack of steel sheet metal prevents the pumps from accruing rust over time (some components, such as the screws are stainless steel). “Builder” type Aqua-Mate pumps (73 and 75 models) are constructed of rugged cast iron with a baked on enamel finish for increased corrosion-resistance. Builder pumps also feature a heat sink to dissipate the motor heat. Regardless of construction type, each Aqua-Mate pump has been factory tested to be completely submersible and is also hermetically sealed to be watertight and dust tight. Zoeller Flow-Mate 140/4140 & 145/4145 Series The Flow-Mate series of pumps feature cast iron construction and are designed specifically for septic tank systems with low pressure pipe (LPP) and enhanced flow step systems. These submersible pumps can be used for sump applications, effluent (graywater) applications and general dewatering purposes. Goulds 1SC Series

Goulds 1SC series pumps are drainage booster pumps for high pressure dewatering applications. They are mainly used for pumping water out of reservoirs and storage tanks and can often be found in houses, farms, mobile home parks and motels. Each pump contains multiple stages (3, 4 or 5) for increased pressure applications. 1SC pumps can handle up ⅛” suspended solids and can be submerged in water up to 65 ft. Goulds 1DW Series

The 1DW “Ditch Wizard” pumps are expressly built for handling dirty waters in dewatering applications. These pumps can be used in draining ditches and pits, industrial water drainage and general excavation in the building trades. To that end, each 1DW pump can handle up to ⅜” spherical solids. The pumps can be submerged in up to 23 ft. of water.”

Goulds 2DW Series

Like it’s cousin the 1DW series, the 2DW “Ditch Wizard” pumps are designed to move water from drainage ditches, as well as trenches, basements and manholes. 2DW pumps are constructed with durability and corrosion-resistance as the priority. Each pump features a polyurethane impeller and diffuser (with a rubber lining around the impeller), a bottom strainer made of EPDM impact-absorbing rubber and dual seals. The strainer can handle any size incoming solids.
In addition, the 2” NPSM threaded hose coupling discharge can be configured for either vertical or horizontal discharge depending on the piping. 2DW pumps come with single phase motors built with automatic full overload and temperature protection. Can be submerged up to 16.5 ft.

STS21/STS31 Series

STS21 and STS31 series sump pumps are both durable and lightweight, constructed with a corrosion resistant stainless steel casing for added protection from groundwater. These pumps are compact, portable and can be used for dewatering applications in additional to basement flooding applications. Each pump of this series can handle 3/16″ spherical solids. A vertical mounting pipe and a vertical float switch are included with the pump. Pump Products currently carries the STS21V.

LSP03/LSP07 Series

The LSP03 and LSP07 series pumps are built with corrosion resistant stainless steel construction to withstand the corrosive effect of too much groundwater. These pumps are lightweight, compact and portable. Although basement pumping is the primary function, they can also be moved and used for other dewatering applications.

The main difference between this series and the STS series is the LSP pumps can: 1) reach higher heads and flow rate capacities 2) can handle up to ⅜” spherical solids and 3) have a wider variety of float switch types available. “AV” models include a vertical float switch, “A” models include a built-in switch and “AT” models include a replaceable piggyback float switch. SPBB and SPBB2 Battery Backup Sump Pumps

The Goulds Battery Backup is a good supplemental option for your system if you are worried about losing power. It operates on a battery that kicks on if there is a power failure and ensures that your pit or basin does not overflow. The SPBB series pumps are self-charging and include indicator lights on the charger. Battery box, check valve, float and pipe fittings are included, but the battery is sold separately.

Discharge height and GPH will determine the battery life, while an alarm alerts you when the pump is operating but the battery won’t charge. Pump Products currently carries both the SPBB and the SPBB2.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guides: Little Giant Series Pond Pumps

Little Giant is well known for its pumps dedicated to ponds, fountains and other outdoor water features.

The core purpose of these pond pumps is to keep water the water in your pond circulating consistently. Stagnant water can often lead to algae and bacteria forming; when water is stagnant it absorbs more sunlight which helps algae reproduce using the photosynthesis process. Circulating the water causes a natural filtration effect and is critical to maintaining the overall health of the pond ecosystem, including any plants or fish. Pond pumps should be rated for continuous use.

In addition to general water circulation, some pond pumps can also be used for more elaborate aesthetic applications, such as waterfalls, fountain displays, streams and tabletop water displays. Keep in mind that some of these displays may require additional fittings or accessories to produce the desired display effect.

Little Giant PE Series Pond Pumps

PE series pumps are submersible direct drive pumps built for continuous use. “Direct drive” simply means that the motor shaft is directly attached to the impeller, thus the pump can produce greater starting torque and high pressures than magnetic drive pumps (such as the PES series).

The PE pumps are built for straightforward applications such as the circulation of ponds and fountains. Each model is low head (about 7 ft. maximum) and with a lightweight, compact design can fit in virtually any manmade pond system. Ideal for smaller scale pond systems. Pump Products carries the 566608, the 566611 and the 566612.


Little Giant PES Series Pond Pumps

PES series pumps are submersible magnetic drive pumps designed for continuous use. As the designation suggests, these pumps use magnetic force to move. The motor and the impeller are separate components; when the motor rotates a magnet on the motor housing moves another magnet attached to the impeller. The advantage of the magnetic drive pump, as opposed to direct drive pumps (such as the PE series) is that relatively little energy is consumed. This can lead to significant savings in the long run. Since the motor and impeller are separated, the risk of leakage is reduced as well.

These pumps are ideal for continuous water circulation in a pond or fountain system. They can also be used in small to midsized applications requiring low head and high flow, such as tabletop water fountains. Each model also includes a built-in adjustable flow control valve for increased control. Pump Products carries the 566720, the 566721 and the 566722.


Little Giant WGP Series Pond Pumps

WGP series pumps are continuous use, direct drive pumps that are designed for high head water feature applications, such as waterfall displays (even advertised by Little Giant as “waterfall pumps”). These versatile pumps can be installed either horizontally or vertically, depending on your application needs.

Most impressively, WGP series pumps feature a dual discharge design that allows the pump to perform two functions simultaneously. For instance, one port can pump out to a waterfall or fountain, while the other port circulates water. Each pump includes a barbed elbow adapter to connect to piping and a discharge cap to cover one port when it is not in use. Pump Products carries the 566407 and the 566409.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guides: Goulds Series Booster Pumps

Booster pumps are supplemental pumps used to increase the pressure of a fluid (usually water) traveling to a home or building.

Water pressure could be lacking due to factors such as friction loss, gravity and dispersion among multiple fixtures. Multi-story buildings often use booster pumps when water pressure dissipates on the top floors. Homeowners will often install a booster pump when their home is at the end of a municipal water line or if they are installing a new water fixture that will draw water pressure from existing fixtures. Some just prefer stronger water pressure.

The breakdown diagram below shows a typical booster pump installation in a system that gets water from a municipal line. In this particular instance, the pump is a Goulds Aquavar e-ABII package with tank, gauge and transducer included. Other installations might look roughly similar. The key point is that booster pumps do not have suction power; water must be fed into the booster for it to operate properly.

The expansion tank holds excess water to relieve pressure so that the pump does not short cycle. Once the tank is full, the air bladder inside the tank contracts and the pump is shut off. The extra water can then be pumped out of the tank.

In addition to home and office use, booster pumps are often used for agricultural washdown, farming and irrigation, as well as for extreme pressure washing.

A note:

It is important to not “deadhead” these pumps or run them dry. That’s a sure guarantee for burnt plastic and a damaged pump. A recirculator pump could be useful in making sure that water is always flowing through the pump.

Goulds GB Booster Pumps Series

The Goulds GB series pumps are horizontal multistage pumps that are designed for high head, low-flow pressure boosting applications. Models are designated with a best efficiency flow rate, and the GB series includes 5 GPM, 7 GPM, 10 GPM, 18 GPM and 25 GPM models (Note that the maximum flow rates for these models are higher than the best efficiency flow rate). The Total Dynamic Head for this series can range from 200 ft. to over 600 ft. depending on the specific model.

GB series booster pumps are designed for durability and corrosion resistance. The elements of each stage are particularly tough: the impeller and diffuser are made of glass filled engineered composite material while the bowl is 300 stainless steel. The multistage design also allows for pumping to high heads while simultaneously operating quietly and vibration free.

Models marked with “C” have cast iron diffuser heads, while models marked with “S” are stainless steel for filtration applications.

Goulds HB Booster Pumps Series

The Goulds HB series is similar to its cousin the GB series in that it is a close coupled high head multistage pump. HB series pumps can reach total heads ranging from 200 ft. to over 700 ft. depending on the number of stages in a specific model. The main difference is that the HB series can also operate in applications with higher flow capacities. The series includes pump models with best efficiency flow rates of 45 GPM and 70 GPM.

HB series pumps feature multiple stages that are durable and corrosion resistant, with both the impeller and diffuser constructed of glass filled thermoplastic, while the bowl is 300 series stainless steel.

Goulds Aquavar ABII Booster Pump Package

The Goulds Aquavar e-ABII is a popular package kit for larger residential and light commercial applications with low to mid-range head requirements. The package can come in a variety of configurations, but each package will include the e-HM pump model (some will be multistage), a variable speed intelligent controller and a transducer to measure the pressure within a system.

Packages that include the expansion tank (pictured above) will also feature a compact one piece e-HM pump. 1HM and 3HM pump models with this package can contain sizes up to 6 stages while 5HM models can reach up to 5 stages.

The other Aquavar package without the tank (pictured below) will feature a sleeve design pump with separate suction housing. 1HM and 3HM pumps of this type will have at least 7 stages, while the 5HM pumps have at least 6 stages.

The difference between the compact pumps and the sleeve pumps is in the maximum working pressure each can handle. Compact pumps can handle up to 145 psi (pounds per square inch) while sleeve pumps can handle up to 230 psi.

The intelligent controller works by sensing water use and adjusting the speed of the motor accordingly. The controller can also regulate the motor through remote commands and monitors the system to alert you of any hazards. Goulds advertises the system as “cruise control for your pump.” Each includes a power cord. Some can be wall mounted. Be sure to install the controller in the proper enclosure based on its rating.

Models in this series can reach heads ranging from the Total Dynamic Heads ranging from 25 ft.at the low end to over 250 ft. at the high end.

Goulds Convertible Jet Pumps: Buyer’s Guide

 

Convertible jet pumps are well pumps that can be configured to move water in either shallow well or deep well systems. These pumps operate through suction power, in which a pressure differential moves the water in an upward motion.

Most people commonly rely on either shallow well jet pumps, which can draw from water tables up to 25 ft. underground or deep well jet pumps which can draw water from water tables up to 90 ft. underground (depending on the model). Water table levels can sometimes fluctuate, however, whether due to climate, elevation or other factors.

Thus the advantage of the convertible jet pump is that it can help the user adapt to a potentially fluctuating water table. If you want the confidence of knowing that you will be able to get well water no matter the changes, a convertible jet pump may be for you. The pumps sit above ground but can be equipped with a submersible jet ejector assembly to increase operating depth. Keep in mind that the appropriate fittings are are necessary to convert the pump from one application to another.

J+ Series Convertible Jet Pumps


The J+ series convertible jet pumps are specifically designed for homes, farms, cottages and booster service. PumpProducts.com carries the J5, J7, J10 and J15 models. Each model in the J+ series is designed with a back pullout design that allows for easy service and maintenance without disturbing the piping. Note that the tubing comes connected for shallow well use; a deep well configuration requires a JDW fittings package or an AV22 kit to make the pressure switch connection.

 

 

Unlike with most other types of pumps, the relevant performance statistics of convertible jet pumps will vary greatly depending on the application configuration and fittings used. The charts below show the performance for each model in the J+ Series for a shallow well package and two deep well packages (twin pipe and Packer). Within each chart the flow rate differential depending on the adapter, nozzle and venturi used is also shown.

 


JRD Series Convertible Jet Pumps


The JRD Series pumps are specifically designed for use in homes, farms, cottages and for booster service. The primary difference between the J+ series and the JRD series is in construction. J+ pumps contain a motor adapter in the casing while in JRD pumps the front housing connects directly to a plate. J+ models are a little pricier so if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative for the same applications, consider the JRD series.

HSJ Series Convertible Jet Pumps

The Goulds HSJ series convertible jet pumps are multi-stage pumps operating at 60 Hz. These pumps are specifically designed to deliver high capacity flow at greater pressures than the J+ or JRD series. The hex design provides positive drive for the impellers and eliminates any clearance adjustments.

Like its cousins, the HSJ series is also designed for homes, farms, cottages and booster service. We carry the HSJ07N, HSJ10N, the HSJ15N and the HSJ20N.
