Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Goulds 3657 Series Centrifugal Pumps

The Goulds centrifugal 3657 series is commonly used for pure water transfer, chemical transfer, pharmaceutical procedures or food and beverage processing.

This series features materials made of superior construction. Liquid end components consist of precision investment cast 316 stainless steel for added corrosion resistance and strength. Casing for this series features an investment cast AISI type 316 stainless steel volute design for maximum efficiency. Vertical discharges come standard but are field modifiable to four standard positions.

The frame mounted design allows for flexibility of installation and driver arrangements. Mechanical seals are standard Flowserve 31 seals with carbon versus silicon-carbide faces, Viton elastomers and 316 stainless steel metal parts. Optional seals are available for high temperature and mild abrasive services.

A close-coupled, compact design saves space and simplifies installation. An enclosed impeller allows for maximum efficiency and service life with no need for clearance adjustment. The back pull out design also simplifies maintenance by allowing the casing to remain in the piping during disassembly. Shafts and sleeves are comprised of high strength steel.

Motors in this series are NEMA standard JM or T frames that are available in both single and three phase designs with a variety of enclosures and voltage to match your service requirements.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Goulds 3656 L Series Centrifugal Pumps

The Goulds 3656 L Series of end-suction, centrifugal pumps have been designed for a variety of water supply, recirculation, and cooling applications. This series is available in all iron or bronze fitted construction for application versatility.

This series offers a close coupled design for space saving and simplified maintenance. The 3656 series is also designed for back pull-out to reduce maintenance down time. Replaceable wearing components include stainless steel shaft sleeves, casing, and hub wear rings to maintain peak efficiency.

This series features a bronze fitted, enclosed impeller available in multiple diameters. Dynamic balancing and renewable wear rings reduce losses affecting performance and pump life.

These pumps are built with a 125 class ANSI flanged suction and discharge that come in multiple sizes. This allows for piping connection versatility. NPT threaded connections are supplied on 1½ x 2 – 10 and 2½ x 3 – 8 models.

Standard type 21 mechanical seals provide for both reliability and availability. Carbon/ceramic/BUNA standard, with other faces and elastomers are available.

The motors come in open drip-proof or totally enclosed fan cooled, and in 1180 or 1750 RPM versions. Optional explosion proof and high efficiency motors are available.

These pumps are available in a wide range of power outputs. The selected options determine the maximum head and flow.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Goulds LB Series Booster Pumps

The Goulds LB series of booster pumps provide an economical alternative for small booster sets with flow requirements up to 18 GPM and heads up to 190 feet. Applications for this series include reverse osmosis (R/O) systems and potable water boosting.
This series of single stage pumps features casing constructed of stainless steel. Centerline connections are NPT threaded with easily accessible vent, prime, and drain connections. Stainless steel plugs make this series particularly convenient. Impellers, guide vanes and motor adapters are all built with high strength but also light weight engineered composite.
Mechanical seals are standard John Crane type 6 seals with carbon ceramic faces, EPR elastomers, and stainless steel metal parts.
Motors in this series are NEMA standard 48Y and 56Y open drip proof enclosures with optional single phase and three phase TEFC configuration.
Please note that pumps from the LB series should not be used with liquids that contain caustic substances, detergents, hydrocarbons, petroleum, or acids. For three phase motors, overload protection must be provided in the starter unit. Starter and heaters must be ordered separately.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Myers WHR Series Sewage Pumps

Myers pumps are known for their versatility and this series is no exception.

Myers WHR series pumps are typically designed for residential and commercial sewage, high capacity sump, effluent, domestic wastewater, septic pumping, and other sewage or effluent applications that require high head.

A high capacity handling ability allows the WHR series to pass 2-inch spherical solids.  The recessed vortex impeller provides an unobstructed passage in the volute case which allows these pumps to handle stringy, trashy solids without plugging the impeller. The vortex impeller also greatly extends the pump’s bearing life and eliminates jamming between volute cases.

The WHR series features a cast iron construction to withstand even the most extreme conditions. This series is also available in single seal and double seal models, providing additional protection against water leakage and extending motor life. An optional leak probe can sense leakage past seals in models that feature a dual seal.

The WHR series has durable, oil filled motors that are designed for continuous bearing lubrication and maximum heat dissipation. A high-torque, permanent split capacitor motor means no starting switches or relays that wear out.

Heat sensors add overload protection with automatic reset when motors cool to a safe operating temperature.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Myers MW Series Sewage Pumps

Myers MW Series Pumps are suitable for high head applications and offer optional dual seal performance for demanding residential and commercial sewage pumping applications.

Typical applications include residential and commercial sewage, high capacity sump, effluent, domestic wastewater and septic pumping.

This series’ cast Iron housing and volute case stands tough in demanding applications that feature extremely corrosive environments. The enclosed two-vane impeller (available in cast iron or bronze) provides high efficiency pumping and will easily handle stringy, trashy 2” solids without clogging. This design also eliminates jamming between impeller and volute.  This series also features 300 series stainless steel fasteners and a 20 foot power cord.

A high torque, permanent split capacitor motor allows for powerful starts with no starting switches or relays to wear out.  The rugged, oil-filled motors of this series are designed for bearing lubrication and maximum heat dissipation. Optional leak probes sense water leakage past the seals on dual seal motor models.

Single phase models feature a heat sensor which prevent overheating by protecting the pump with an automatic reset when the motor cools to a safe operating temperature.

This series is easy to maintain and service as only four screws need to be removed for motor access. The pump’s volute seal ring is replaceable for added service convenience.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Berkeley SSCX Series Centrifugal Pumps

Berkeley’s SSCX series high head, centrifugal pumps are your ideal choice for a wide range of pump applications and varying temperature conditions. This series is designed specifically for water circulation, booster service, liquid transfer, spray systems, jockey pumps, and OEM applications.

This series features a high-temperature rating (up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit), stainless steel or noryl impellers, 1.25” suction, 1” discharge, and drain/vent ports. The open drip-proof or totally enclosed fan cooled motors are available in single or three phase, 0.75-2.5 HP, and a variety of voltages.

This series of centrifugal pumps are remarkably versatile. Stainless steel housing and shafts ensures corrosion resistant dependability in chemical as well as water applications. A smooth flow path assures quiet operation.

Precision lapped mechanical shaft seals are constructed from highly polished carbon-ceramic, stainless steel with buna elastomers in order to deliver long life reliability.

This series has three seal options to meet a wide variety of applications. The standard seal in the SSCX series is buna carbon/ceramic. The volute uses a buna O-ring to seal the pumping chamber section. Other seal options include Viton with carbon/ceramic or carbon/silicon faces that include a Viton O-ring that can be changed out in the pump volute.

Noryl composite impellers are precision molded for perfect balance and lasting quality. Ultra smooth inlet ports maximize performance, efficiency, and durability. Drain and vent ports make draining not only easier, but faster as well.

Grundfos CR


Grundfos CRI series pumps are vertical multistage centrifugal pumps that are suitable for a wide variety of applications from the pumping of potable water to the pumping of certain chemicals. The compact in-line design makes it easy for the CRI pump to be installed in a horizontal one-pipe system where the suction and and discharge port are in the same plane and have the same dimensions.

CRI pumps are often used for industrial processing systems, washing and cleaning systems, pumping of acids and alkalis, filtration systems, water pressure boosting, water treatment, HVAC applications and irrigation applications. The basic CRI range can be applied in almost any industrial application. High quality Grundfos engineering is a hallmark of the series, with the pumps featuring optimized hydraulics, connections, outer sleeves and other optimized components.

Please note that the units listed below are pump ends only. The specific horsepower needed for each model is noted, but the motor is not included with purchase.

Pump ends are 100% factory tested before shipment.

TYPICAL CONFIGURATIONS

The above diagram shows a typical configuration. The suction pipe should be properly sized and as straight and short as possible so as to minimize friction loss. Grundfos recommends avoiding unnecessary fittings, valves or accessories – a butterfly valve can be used on the suction line when a pump has to be isolated due to flooded suction.

The below diagram is an example of where to install a bypass in the discharge pipe. The bypass is only necessary if there is a risk of the pump operating against a closed valve in the discharge line. Elbows should be at least 12″ removed from the bypass opening to prevent erosion.

Inspector Pumphead’s Buyers Guide: Goulds 2ED Series Submersible Effluent Pumps

The Goulds 2ED Series of submersible effluent pumps are designed for most effluent systems. Specific applications include farms, trailer courts, motels, schools, hospitals, and industrial settings.

This versatile series of pumps have a maximum solid handling ability of ¾” and are designed for continuous use.

Shafts are constructed of stainless steel and are corrosion resistant. A lock-nut is included on all models to guard against component damage in case of accidental reverse rotation. The 2ED series also features dual mechanical seals and the 300 series features stainless steel fasteners.

Motors for the 2ED series are fully submerged in high grade turbine oil for lubrication and efficient heat transfer. All single phase models include a capacitor start for maximum starting torque. Three phase models are designed for continuous operation so the pump can operate without damage when fully submerged. Upper and lower ball bearings are of heavy duty construction and an O-ring assures positive sealing against contaminants or oil leakage. An epoxy seal on the motor end provides a secondary moisture barrier in case of outer jacket damage and to prevent oil wicking.

Power cables for this series are oil and water resistant.  Cables for this series are the standard length of 20 feet while also having optional lengths available.

Grundfos CR series pumps are booster pumps that are modular by design, able to accommodate  various types of seals, connections and components. The modular approach allows for CR pumps to be used in a wide variety of application settings.

CR pumps can serve in:

–High pressure applications including filtration, reverse osmosis, steam boiler feeding, HVAC, irrigation, washing and cleaning and various industrial process settings.
