Inspector Pumphead Recommends: Zoeller M95 Flow Mate Sump Pump

Welcome back to Inspector Pumphead Recommends! In this feature, I will be recommending a specific pump model and highlighting the features, specifications, and benefits of this pump. It could be a new product, a best seller, a seasonally appropriate pump or one that is strongly recommended by the application engineers.

Let’s dive in!

Zoeller 95-0001

Zoeller 95 Flow Mate Sump Pump

Today I am highlighting the Zoeller 95 Flow Mate sump pump. The Zoeller 95 is a submersible sump pump, designed to handle groundwater or effluent water in residential or light commercial application settings.

The Zoeller 95 is a high capacity pump that can move water with up to ½” spherical solids and is completely submersible in waters up to 130°F.

Construction

Most Zoeller 95’s are made with a durable cast iron, including the switch case, volute and base. A powder coated epoxy finish is applied to the exterior for extra corrosion resistance. The finish also allows for greater heat dissipation from the motor, ensuring a long service life. There are no sheet metal parts that are susceptible to corrosion within the body of the pump and no screens to clog.

The close coupled motor is a permanent split capacitor type with a oil filled hermetically sealed Class B insulation. It operates at 60 Hz and 3450 RPM with 10.5 amps. The motor housing is also cast iron. The shaft seal is carbon and ceramic and there is a watertight neoprene square ring sealing the motor from the volute. The upper bearing is a sleeve type while the lower bearing is a ball type.

The standout feature of the Zoeller 95 pump is the 5-year warranty, a signal of how highly Zoeller thinks of the pump’s quality.

Inspector Pumphead Recommends: Zoeller MX161 Explosion Proof Effluent Pump

Welcome to Inspector Pumphead Recommends! In this feature, I will be recommending a specific pump model and highlighting the features, specifications, and benefits of this pump. It could be a new product, a best seller, a seasonally appropriate pump or one that is strongly recommended by the application engineers.

Let’s dive in!

Zoeller 161-0106

Zoeller MX161 161-0106 Explosion Proof Effluent Pump

Part of the innovative X160 series, the Zoeller 161-0106 can be used for either residential or commercial dewatering/effluent applications in Class 1, Division 1, Group C and D* environments.

Performance-wise, the Zoeller 161-0106 is built for high head residential and commercial effluent/dewatering applications. The Zoeller MX161 can be submerged in a maximum temperature of 104°F water continuously and can pass water with ¾” solids.

This is an excellent choice for effluent applications in areas where flammable vapors could be an issue.

Construction

Of course, being an explosion proof pump, the Zoeller MX161 is durable and built to withstand harsh environments where flammable vapors might be present.

The cover, motor adapter and pump housing are all Class 30 cast iron. The shaft seal is composed of stainless steel wetted parts, carbon and ceramic, while the float and vortex impeller are non-ferrous brass. The pump also features an innovative motor and electrical enclosures that reduce vapor ignition on the interior and exterior of the pump. Should flammable vapors inside the enclosures spark, the enclosures can contain the ignition and keep it from spreading. Moisture sensors are pre-wired into the motor housing.

The discharge is 1-½” NPT threaded, with an option for a flanged discharge attachment. The power cord is 25 ft. with five bare lead wires. All in all, this is an excellent pump that will perform well for for any effluent or dewatering application in a hazardous area.

A UL-listed 5 wire power cord with sensor and power leads is included with the pump.

Hazardous Areas

*And now a brief word on hazardous areas, as defined by the NEC and NFPA:

Class I, Division 1: There are three different situations that could exist to classify an area as a Class I, Division 1 location:

–Ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors may exist under normal operating conditions.
–Ignitable concentrations of such gases or vapors may exist frequently because of repair or maintenance operations or because of leakage.
–Breakdown or faulty operation of equipment or processes might release ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors, and might also cause simultaneous failure of electric equipment.

Group C: Flammable gas, flammable liquid-produced vapor or combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than or equal to 0.45mm or less than 0.75mm, or minimum igniting current ratio (MIC ratio) greater than 0.40 and less than or equal to 0.80. Example: Ethylene – 497:3.3.5.1.3.

Group D: Flammable gas, flammable liquid-produced vapor or combustible liquid-produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) value greater than or equal to 0.75mm or minimum igniting current ratio (MIC ratio) greater than 0.80. Example: Propane – 497:3.3.5.1.4.

Inspector Pumphead Recommends: Goulds J7S Shallow Well Jet Pump

Welcome back to Inspector Pumphead Recommends! In this feature, I will be recommending a specific pump model and highlighting the features, specifications, and benefits of this pump. It could be a new product, a best seller, a seasonally appropriate pump or one that is strongly recommended by the application engineers.

Let’s dive in!

Goulds J7S

Goulds J7S Shallow Well Jet Pump

Today I am highlighting the Goulds J7S shallow well jet pump. This popular jet pump is our best-selling jet pump and is known for top notch construction, efficiency, versatility and consistent performance.

As with all shallow well jet pumps, the Goulds J7S is built to draw water from a water table no more than 25 ft. underground. This pump can typically be found in homes, farms and cottages, as well as in booster applications.

Construction

The defining feature of the Goulds J7S is the integral shallow well adapter that is built into the casing, removing the need for a separate shallow well adapter. This makes the pump compact and relatively easy to install.

This pump is also easy to maintain. The motor is divided into two compartments for easy access to the wiring and replaceable components while a back pullout design allows the user to access the pump components without disturbing the surrounding piping. The engineered plastic tubing and fittings can also be easily removed for cleaning or examination. The pump case includes a nozzle clean out plug.

The volute is cast iron with an electro-coated paint process that is applied to the interior and exterior and then baked on for corrosion resistance. The impeller is FDA compliant, glass filled Noryl and is both corrosion and abrasion resistant. The bolted down diffuser guide vane ensures positive alignment with the impeller. The mechanical seal’s special diaphragm design retains water in the casing so the seal itself never runs dry. The Goulds J7S is powered for continuous operation and is self-priming after the initial prime.

This basic pump package includes the close-coupled pump/motor, a AN018 nozzle, a AD3336 venturi and a AS4 pressure switch. The pressure switch is preset to 30-50 PSI.
