  • Quick Tips: Pullout Design for Goulds Irrigator Pumps

    July 11, 2017

In this space, I, Inspector Pumphead from PumpProducts.com, will be sending out friendly reminders and dispensing basic tips for ordering, maintaining and servicing pumps. The Inspector is in and here to help! Tip: Pumps with a back pullout design are easier to clean, service and repair. You may have noticed that some of our Centrifugal Pumps, such as the Goulds IRRI-GATOR, are listed as having a “back pullout” or “pullout design.” This simply means that the rotating assembly of the pump can be pulled out of the volute or pump casing without disturbing the piping. As noted above, this makes cleaning those areas of the pump (including parts such as bearings, shaft seals, etc.) much easier. Quick disassembly can also be beneficial if you need to perform any maintenance. This can save you a lot of time, money and headaches.   Pump Products applications engineers are standing by to help you find the right pump, as well as to provide price quotes, availability and shipping information. • Inspector Pumphead’s Quick Tips: Save on Insurance with A Backup Sump Pump

    July 7, 2017

Welcome back to everyone’s favorite semi-recurring content feature: Inspector Pumphead’s Quick Tips! In this space, Inspector Pumphead from Pump Products will be sending out friendly reminders and dispensing basic tips for pump handling and maintenance.  The Inspector is in and here to help! Tip: A backup sump pump could earn you a discount on your insurance. If you are a homeowner, you probably know that standard homeowners’ insurance does not cover a flooded basement, nor does flood insurance. Naturally, this can cause quite the headache for those of us who live in flood-prone areas, especially during certain seasons. Unfortunately, many people assume they are covered until the flooding actually happens and then they have to deal with a reticent insurance company. If you own a sump pump, however, there is a specific rider that could help: the “Back Up of Sewer, Drain and Sump Pump Coverage” rider or HO-208. This specific rider could potentially cover damage up to $10,000 if a sump pump does not activate due to power failure. Some insurance companies even offer discounts if you have a battery backup sump pump! Of course, the ability to obtain a discount will be dependent on your insurance company and its policies.  Even if you can’t get a discount, a battery backup sump pump might well be worth the cost. Consider the stuff you have in your basement - furniture, electronics, old family heirlooms - and the relative value of all that stuff. We have heard stories of people having $30,000 worth of stuff in their basement and having it damaged due to flooding. A backup sump pump is a bargain in comparison. • Inspector Pumphead’s Classroom: Training with Ion Technologies

    July 7, 2017

Welcome to Inspector Pumphead’s Classroom! In this series, I will discuss various aspects of pumps, pumping technology and the pump industry. I'm here to school you on pumps! I will also share stories about the intense training that my disciples, as well as my application engineers, received. Many manufacturers often send representatives to help our staff better understand certain products and how they can help the customer.  So pull up a chair, open up your notebook and grab a pen - it’s time for class! Training With Ion Technologies Pump Products staff recently attended a training seminar with a representative from Ion Technologies. Ion is one of Pump Products newest manufacturing partners and this session allowed our application engineers, marketing and web staff gain a better understanding of the strengths and features of certain Ion products. Ion Rep Carla gave an informative presentation on both the history and current efforts of the company. Ion originally began as a switch manufacturer for other companies, eventually moving into manufacturing pumps and systems.  Ion created a distinctive bell-shaped switch that Ion is still currently known for. Despite the appearance, these are not diaphragm switches. The Ion switch uses the same technology found in post office scales to measure pressure and water levels. Since the detection technology is built into the switch, it does not need the room to swing like other tethered switches, instead it simply hangs straight down. A piggyback switch with an alarm is also available. When the water level reaches 6”, the switch activates the pump. If the water reaches 8 ½”, the alarm will activate. In many ways, the switches are still Ion’s signature but they have greatly expanded their range of products. The training session concentrated specifically on Ion’s line of basement sump pumps, which are some of the most popular Ion products, specifically the StormPro series. Sump Pumps and Backups StormPro sump pumps are powerful but compact, better to fit on the floor of a basin. Built for basic sump and dewatering applications, StormPro pumps are made of cast iron and stainless steel and include a thermoplastic vortex impeller for passing solids. The StormPro series is a solid, easy to install residential pump. One of the most interesting pieces on display was the Sumpro battery backup system. Instead of using an additional pump with a battery, the primary pump plugs into the inverter box which is connected to a wall outlet. The inverter takes the current and charges the battery, which only kicks on when the power cuts out. This ensures that your primary pump can pump at its true capacity for the full battery life of (9 to 12 hours). Ion also sells stands to keep the inverter dry. Different battery brands can also be inserted into the inverter box as long as they fit. A more traditional duplex backup system with two pumps was also featured, as was the Ion Genesis controller. Carla stressed that while many residential customers preferred the convenience of an all-in-one system, the different parts of the system are available for a la carte purchase as well. It all comes down to customer preference. Ion also features a 3-year warranty from the date of manufacture for most of its products. “We almost never have a problem with the warranty process,” Carla said. “If an issue comes up, we make sure to take care of our customers.” It was an informative session that helped Pump Products application engineers better understand the products of a partner and be able to communicate those benefits to customers. Many more sessions like this will be held in the future. It’s all about increasing knowledge and improving customer service. Pump Products applications engineers are standing by to help you find the right pump, as well as to provide price quotes, availability and shipping information. • Inspector Pumphead Talks Wimbledon!

    July 5, 2017

Wimbledon is underway and Inspector Pumphead has some thoughts on this grand tennis tournament. Probably the most well-known and prestigious of all the Major tennis tournaments, Wimbledon takes place every summer in London. This event is famous for its fast grass courts, all-white dress code and the consistent attendance of prominent celebrities, including members of the Royal Family. Both the men’s and women’s finals are some of typically the highest rated tennis broadcasts all year, despite the time difference between the UK and the US. This year will continue the recurrent themes for both the men’s and women’s draw. On the women’s side, the absence of Serena Williams widens the potential field considerably. In the men’s draw, the veteran’s crew continues to hold sway, as the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are favorites to fend off the younger crew. It should be an interesting draw. Let’s dive into some of these factors in the preview. Golden Oldies Tennis has long been known as a young man’s (or woman’s) game, it was much more common to see a 17-year old wunderkind win a major tournament than a player over 29. Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, perhaps the two biggest icons of the 70s/80s tennis boom, both won their last Major tournaments at 25 years old and that was not a particularly unusual fact. But now, many of the top players in the world are dominant well into their 30s. In fact, the entire top five is part of the thirty-something crowd: --Andy Murray, 30 --Rafael Nadal, 31 --Stan Wawrinka, 32 --Roger Federer, 35 --Novak Djokovic, 30 It’s pretty remarkable and the first time in the history of tennis rankings that this has happened. There could be a variety of explanations as to why older players are surviving. This Wall Street Journal story digs into some of the factors. Perhaps the most pertinent explanation includes the advances in sports nutrition, awareness of injury prevention methods and the recuperative techniques. These are valuable tools that help older players maintain their edge.  With elite older players combining their knowledge and experience with a retained athleticism, it is more difficult than ever for younger players to break through the ranks. It will be fascinating to see if young guns such as Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori and Nick Kyrgios can dethrone their idols. Questions in the Women’s Draw When the dominant Serena Williams is not playing, the field is considered wide open. World no. 1 Angelique Kerber would ostensibly be the favorite but she has been struggling as of lately and will probably lose her top ranking. Simona Help and Karolina Pliskova are in play as are crowd favorites Caroline Wozniacki and Coco Vandeweghe. Despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that there aren’t as many big names in the women’s draw, it could be even more interesting than the men’s side. • AMT Model 12SP10C-3P Chemical Transfer Pump Buyers Guide & Review

    July 5, 2017

Welcome back to another edition of Inspector Pumphead Recommends! In this column, I will show my skills and experience as an Inspector to highlight and explain the features, specifications and benefits of specific pump models. The pump that is featured here might be a best-seller, be seasonally appropriate or have unique features that set it apart from other pumps of a similar type. In today’s edition of “Inspector Pumphead Recommends” I will be highlighting the AMT 12SP10C-3P self-priming cast iron chemical pump. AMT is a great brand for pumps used at job sites and they carry many other centrifugal chemical pumps. What is a Chemical Pump A chemical pump is simply a pump that is is able to transport or process chemicals in addition to water and wastewater. This is due to the special construction of the pump which is resistant to corrosion or the other ill effects often caused by chemical substances. Keep in mind that these pumps can’t pump any old universal chemical. As with any other pump, they are built to precise specifications and can handle certain applications. For instance, the AMT 12SP10C-3P is not to be used with petroleum based liquids. But it is still one of the best chemical pumps on the market. Application This AMT pump is referred to as a general transfer chemical pump and is specifically designed specifically for commercial and industrial applications. The main applications are high volume liquid transfer, wastewater drainage and chemical processing. This pump can often be found in factories, refineries and chemical processing plants. The AMT 12SP1C-3P can handle liquids with specific gravities up to 1.3 Specific gravity, telling you the density of the liquid. It is the ratio of the density of substance to the density of the reference substance, which in the case of liquids is water. To put it more simply, the specific gravity measures how dense the desired liquid or chemical is, as compared to water at 4° C. Specific gravity can vary depending on temperature and pressure so the sample substance and the reference substance should be compared with the same conditions. Some common liquid substances with a specific gravity of 1.3 or less include acetylene, ethanol, crude oil, natural gasoline and sea water. The AMT will handle those liquids and many others. For temperature, it can handle fluids ranging from 40° F to 180° F. Performance Here's the performance curve for all AMT self-priming centrifugal pumps: The 12SP series can reach a maximum capacity of approximately 85 GPM and a maximum head of about 60 ft. TDH. Construction Naturally, any chemical pump will feature rugged construction, in this case a cast iron casing with seals made of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber and EPR (ethylene propylene rubber) seals. The dual volute is built to handle working pressures up to 125 PSI and reduces radial load on the motor. The impeller is self-cleaning and clog resistant and can handle ⅜” diameter semi-solids. The dual cycle NEMA 56J motors have stainless steel shafts. A built-in check valve adds to the convenience and allows self-priming up to 20 ft. after the initial prime. A back pullout design also allows for easy service, maintenance and cleaning. This is an impressively designed pump that will be able to move wastewater or chemicals for your application. • Happy Independence Day from Pump Products!

    July 3, 2017

Happy Independence Day from Pump Products! It’s more than just a classic 90s scifi action movie starring legendary actors Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. It is also perhaps the most sacred and uniquely American of all holidays, a date that every child learns at an early age. It is a day to gather with family and friends and celebrate our freedom as a sovereign nation. The date of course, celebrates the original thirteen colonies breaking away from Great Britain to form a new nation. Specifically, the date marks official congressional approval for the written Declaration of Independence which occurred at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Interestingly, independence was technically declared on July 2 of that year, while most of the actual signing took place on August 2, 1776. As we know, conflict had been brewing long before the Continental Congress convened in the hot summer months of 1776.  The American Revolutionary War would not end until September of 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Nevertheless, July 4 is the date that has stuck in the cultural memory and the date that has become an important federal holiday. Whatever the particular dates, Independence is a focal point of national pride and the fact that it takes place during the summer also associates the day with all manner of outdoor activities, such as cookouts, picnics, baseball games, parades and watching fireworks. History July 4 was immediately recognized as a seminal, earth-shaking moment. As early as 1777, celebrations were held to commemorate the anniversary of the Declaration. In Philadelphia, celebrations would be easily recognizable to a modern audience: a parade was held, fireworks were lit and food was plentiful. Various types of celebrations were held over the years, but the day did not actually become a paid federal holiday until 1938. Did You Know While the singers of the Declaration all have historical significance as “Founding Fathers” the only two signatories who would go on to become President were John Adams (in 1797) and Thomas Jefferson (in 1801). The man who derives the most fame from the signing is probably John Hancock whose signature quite literally looms large on the page. Because of the obvious visibility of Hancock’s signature, “Sign your John Hancock” was for a time a popular colloquialism. Traditions and Customs As with any holiday, performing certain rituals is an important part of the observance. The practice allows people to fully immerse themselves in the holiday spirit and feel connected to the people of the past. --Watching the fireworks --Grilling outside --Having a family reunion where your weird cousin fights with your drunk uncle --Spontaneously singing the national anthem and/or “God Bless America” --Shooting some British people with a musket (Just kidding! This is a joke. Pump Products is not liable if you decide to shoot a British person.)
