An in-line circulator pump, or 3-piece circulator, is comprised of three main components: The volute, the motor and the bearing assembly. Bearing assemblies must be periodically lubricated to ensure proper operation unless they are self-lubricating or "maintenance-free." Because they have many moving parts and are in constant use, they are prone to wear and are commonly in need of replacement.
