Extreme cold is defined differently by people in different parts of the country but the fact that water freezes at 32 °F/0 °C is indisputable, as is the threat freezing temperatures pose to hydronic heating systems, which depend on hot water circulation to provide a building with heat and warmed water.

Circulator pumps operate at the heart of hydronic heating systems to move hot water from a boiler through one or more pipe loops leading to radiators and heating baseboards. Keeping these pumps operational is essential to maintaining the system. A pump malfunction during an extreme cold spell could result in frozen pipes and a disabled heating system.
