Pump Products staff have been getting a lot of inquiries from customers seeking advice on Taco D’Mand Recirculator Systems. In the interest of spreading information on our products as widely as possible, here’s what our Product Experts have to say.

Q. I am thinking about putting a Taco D’Mand Recirculator System in my home.  Any suggestions on this product? – Gary, TX

A. It’s estimated that the average family wastes 20 gallons of water per day waiting for hot water. The Taco D’Mand System minimizes the water and energy that is wasted while hot water makes it’s way to fixtures located a long distance from the water heater through the activation of a small, silent pump. The pump is attached to the hot and cold water lines located beneath a kitchen or bath fixture and runs only when activated by button or remote control. When activated, the pump circulates hot water from the water heater and returns cooled water back through the cold water line. When the hot water reaches the faucet, a heat sensor gauges when it is hot enough and shuts off the pump to prevent pumping excess hot water into the cold water line.

It’s a simple, easily installed system that provides quick access to hot water, and eliminates energy waste in a number of ways:

The Taco D’Mand System significantly cuts down on the electricity used in continuous hot-water circulation along with the heat loss that occurs when water is warmed around the clock.
It eliminates the tendency of homeowners to turn the hot water on and walk away while waiting for the temperature to rise.
It recirculates water that is at the ambient temperature of the house back to the hot-water tank where it can subsequently be heated to the set temperature with less energy than chilled water.
It moves water more quickly than the fixture flow rate, ensuring less heat loss in the piping en route to the fixture.

Already a mainstay of energy credit programs and green construction “best-of” lists, the Taco D’Mand System which requires no repiping, has a low annual operating cost (estimated to be about $1 per year) and a life expectancy of 15-20 years, seems to be one of the most sustainable home products offered to the homeowner in the last 20 years.
