The Pump Products Guide to Connecting a Condensate Pump to Your Dehumidifier

At Pump Products, emptying the dehumidifier basin ranks right up there with pulling weeds and shoveling snow. In humid areas, many consumer-grade dehumidifiers can fill up in a day and become a pain to drain. The solution is to bypass the unit’s collection pail by connecting a condensate pump.

Pump Products has a large inventory of quality condensate pumps by HartellHydromaticLibertyMyers and other leading manufacturers for use in dehumidifying applications.

Our product experts recommend checking your unit for a pre-configured bypass outlet that is ready to be connected to a condensate unit. If you can’t find one, you can drill a hole in the collection pail and connect it to a condensate pump in a few simple steps:

1. Make sure that you have access to at least two outlets with sufficient voltage to run both a dehumidifier and a condensate pump. Most condensate pumps are available in 115 volts or 230 volts.

2. Measure the diameter of the condensate pump inlet hose.  The hole you drill in the dehumidifier collection pail should accommodate a hose sized for both.  Use the necessary fittings, tape and/or silicone to connect the hose to the collection pail without leakage.

3. If your dehumidifier is set high, gravity will help the condensate pump move liquid out of your house or down to a drainage or sump area. If your unit sits low in a basement without a pump pit, you will have to run piping to move the liquid up and out. In this case, be sure to choose a condensate pump with a lift rating that is suitable for your application.

4. Plug in the dehumidifier and the condensate pump and pour a bucket of water into the collection pail. Check for leaks and make sure the water is draining into your sump/drainage area.
