Whether it’s a classic water plume or the Bellagio Fountains Water Show, there is a pump at the heart of every fountain. To correctly size a fountain pump from Pump Products’ premium selection of models by Barnes, Little Giant and Zoeller you’ll need three key pieces of information: the diameter of your fountain’s outlet hole,  the discharge size of your pump and the maximum height of your display.

Generally speaking, every inch of stream width at a water display’s outlet requires 100 gallons of water per hour (GPH). Be sure to choose a pump that will provide sufficient GPH.

The diameter of a pump’s discharge determines how much water it can deliver. It also indicates the size of the tubing the pump will accommodate. Select a  pump with a discharge size corresponding to any tubing you will be using.

Choose a pump whose maximum height is higher than the height at which you want your water stream to reach in order  to ensure strong water flow. A discharge flow reducer can be used to adjust the flow if necessary.

Once you’ve selected a properly sized pump, check the cord length. Some codes require the electrical outlet for a water feature to be at least 6 feet away from water.

Finally, make sure the pump is a size and shape that will be concealed when your fountain is assembled.
